How Long Will You Sit on Your Next Great Idea?

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

“I have had a great idea for years now, but never had the opportunity to do it!”

Does that statement sound like one you could make?  Then it’s time to stop talking and start doing!

I know, I know… you don’t have the time, the money, the resources, the whatever.  But I’m here to tell you those are all excuses!

If everyone waited until there was enough time, money, resources or other stuff, no one would ever move to a new house, get married, start families, open a business, etc.  Instead, we’d just leisurely sit around in rocking chairs on our porches discussing ad nauseum what we WOULD and SHOULD do… but definitely won’t.

I’m not saying that your “great idea” is going to be a success, of course, because I can’t predict that.  Who knows?  It could flop miserably.  (Hey, the same thing happened to Walt Disney a few times before he got it right…)  Still, if you don’t go for it, how the heck will you find out?

People rarely end their lives by saying, “I wish I hadn’t…”; instead, they typically say, “I wish I had…”  Keep that in mind and make your next bold move!

  • Celebrating Entrepreneurship

    Friday, July 3rd, 2009

What better way to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend than to give a big cheer to entrepreneurship?

Although Americans like to think that they’re the first to really embrace entrepreneurial ventures, the etymology of the word “entrepreneur” is decidedly French.  In fact, it would seem that the French economist Jean-Baptiste Say most likely coined the term over 200 years ago.

Regardless of the origins of the term, Americans have become synonymous with entrepreneurship for several generations.  What other country could produce a group of people so audacious as to think they could make something out of a dream… only to have it happen?!?

I’m not saying that entrepreneurs don’t exist in other areas of the world.  They absolutely do.  I’ve worked with many and they all share the same spirit.  Yet it seems as if, pound for pound, the United States has produced some of the world’s most notable entrepreneurs — Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Walt Disney.  They were folks who revolutionized business.

As you enjoy your cookouts and fireworks over the holiday, allow the American mantra of “anything’s possible” to permeate your mind and soul.  If you’ve ever felt passionate about becoming an entrepreneur, now is the time.
